How does a pedometer work, exactly? I seem to remember hearing that it counts the number of steps that you take, but does it measure miles as well?

When I take a step with my new pedometer (Omron Pro II) it always records 2 steps, e.g. my feet touch the ground five times, and it says 10 steps).

Why does it do this? Is that how they work, or is there something wrong with it? (It does it whether in my pocket, hand, on my belt etc)
